“달이 차오른다, 가자!” – 서울루나포토 페스티벌 2015

보름달이 뜨는 기간 동안 진행되는 특별한 사진축제, 서울루나포토 페스티벌이 개최된다.
올해로 2회째를 맞는 이번 축제는 서촌의 문화예술공간과 통의동 보안여관, 덕수궁에서 9월 8일부터 20일까지 진행된다.
축제는 누구나 손쉽게 스마트폰으로 사진을 찍고 SNS로 공유하는 이 시대에 예술사진의 의의와 가치에 대한 고민에서부터 출발했다.

전시장에서 액자에 걸린 형태로만 마주할 수 있던 예술 사진을 대중에게 친근하게 소개할 수 있도록 하는 것을 취지로 삼아, 음악과 다른 영상 매체와의 소통이 이뤄진 작업까지 선보인다.
이를 위해 사진가들이 뮤지션, 사운드 디자이너, 비주얼 아티스트 등과 공동 작업을 벌인 미디어 작품을 선보인다.

페스티벌의 하이라이트는 9월 12일 덕수궁 함녕전 마당에서 오후 6시 반부터 진행되는 ‘달과 사진의 밤’이다.
‘달과 사진의 밤’은 포토필름 상영회로서 사진과 음악을 접목한 ‘루나 뮤직 카니발’과 함께 진행된다.

포토필름은 사진을 동영상으로 제작한 슬라이드 프로젝션과 사진 이미지를 빠른 속도로 편집한 스톱모션 등을 말하는데 이 필름에는 올해의 작가로 선정된 강홍구와 오랫동안 대도시의 생활상을 기록해온 마이클 울프, 전세계 유목민의 삶을 추적한 요른 토이어큰스의 작업 등 11개국 18명 작가의 작품을 담았다.

곶자왈
포토필름과 ‘루나 뮤직 카니발’에서는 사진과 음악이 어떻게 협업을 이뤘는지 살펴볼 수 있다.
이루마는 안웅철의 ‘곶자왈’에 영감을 받아 직접 작곡한 곡을 선보이며, 뮤지션 정란은 사진에서 받은 감흥들을 즉흥 라이브로 펼쳐낼 예정이다.

그 뿐 아니라 네이버의 사운드디자이너 정재호와 라인의 사운드 디자이너 전현우가 음악 감독으로 합류해 각 작품에 따라 직접 작곡한 곡을 소개한다.

페스티벌의 올해의 주제는 ‘닻 내리다-유목과 정주 사이에서’(Anchoring-Between wander and settlement)이다.
이 시대는 인터넷을 통한 정보의 이동과 교통의 편리로 물리적 이동이 자유로워졌다.
한편으로는 지구촌 곳곳에서 분쟁과 환경 파괴로 정주하지 못하는 사람들이 존재한다.

에로엔 토이르켄스는 15년 이상 전세계 유목민의 삶을 기록하는 작가다.
그의 사진 속 화려한 전통 의상을 입은 소녀는 ‘꿰맨 옷’이라는 뜻의 라프족이라고도 불리는 세이미족이며, 배경은 핀란드, 스웨덴, 노르웨이, 러시아 등에 걸쳐있는 라플란드라는 지역이다.

세이미족은 천년 역사의 유목민족으로 순록이 먹을 이끼를 찾아 해안가와 내륙을 오가며 살아가지만 유목이라는 삶의 방식은 위기에 처한 상태다.
1986년 체르노빌 원전 폭발의 영향으로 바닷속 물고기와 순록이 먹을 이끼가 오염되었고, 지구 온난화로 빙하가 녹아내리게 됐기 때문이다.
그의 사진 속 하얀 눈밭은 낭만적으로 보이지만 이러한 사실을 인지한 뒤에는 다르게 읽힌다.

이처럼 축제에서는 전통 유목민의 위기와 같은 이 시대의 혼란스러운 흐름을 인식한 작가들 나름대로의 시선을 반영한 작품들이 소개된다.
가족의 해체, 분쟁 지구의 난민, 자신만의 둥지를 찾아나서는 방랑자 등 ‘유목과 정주’라는 키워드로 읽을 수 있는 사진은 관객으로 하여금 주목할 만한 사회적 현상과 대상들을 마주하게 할 것이다.

또한 ‘닻 내리다’라는 주제는 제 2회를 맞이한 행사의 순항을 은유하기도 한다.
디지털 시대에 ‘사진’이라는 미디어가 어떤 방식으로 세상과 소통하며 닻을 내릴 수 있는지에 대한 고민이 포함된다.
그 연장선에서 사진 매체의 안팎을 넘나드는 이해민선과 세바스티앙 디아즈 모랄레스의 실험적인 작업도 함께 소개된다.

류가헌에서는 올해의 작가로 선정된 강홍구 작가의 전시가, 통의동 보안여관에서는 다섯 명의 국내 작가들이 도시의 공간과 시간에 대해 관찰한 작품들을 선보이는 <닻의 아카이브>전이 진행된다.

이용재건축사무소에서는 사진의 경계과 사진매체의 특성을 고민한 다섯명의 국내 작가들의 전시 <Cutting on the Bias>가 진행되며, 공간 291 전시장에서는 2009년 구겐하임 펠로우쉽을 받았던 비주얼 아티스트 세바스티앙 디아즈 모랄레스의 필름이 상영된다.

Straits of Malacca, Malaysia.Malaysia’s ethnic and cultural makeup is largely due to several centuries of migration resulting from its uniquely important position as a maritime trading hub. Hindu and Buddhist cultures imported from India dominated early Malaysian history for centuries. Although Muslims passed through Malaysia as early as the 10th century, it was not until the 14th and 15th centuries that Islam first established itself on the Malay Peninsula. The adoption of Islam by the 15th century saw the rise of a number of sultanates. Trade with China and India during this period saw the first Chinese and Indians settling and adopting aspects of the Malay culture into their own. The descendants of these early ancestors are today's Baba-Nyonya and Chetti community.The Portuguese were the first European colonial powers to establish themselves in Malaysia in 1511, followed by the Dutch. However, it was the British who ultimately secured their hegemony across the territory. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 defined the boundaries between British Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies which then became Indonesia. A fourth phase of influence was the immigration of Chinese and Indian workers to meet the needs of the colonial economy created by the British in the Malay Peninsula and Borneo.

류가헌에서는 9월 8일부터 11일까지 국내 여섯 작가들의 포토필름 상영회가 열리며, <골목, 인사이드 아웃>프로젝트는 통의동 보안여관, 류가헌, 공간 291에서 정주와 교감의 상징적 장소인 골목을 소재이자 주제로 삼을 수 있는 작품들이 소개된다.

그 외에도 루나포토페스티벌은 작가와의 만남, 판소리 공연, 만찬 등 다양한 프로그램을 준비했다.
풍요로운 계절 가을, 사진과 함께 하는 다양한 전시와 행사, 프로그램들은 관객의 감성과 사유를 달이 차오르듯 채워주기 충분할 것이다.
