OVERVIEW
Seoul Lunar Photo Fest is an event that brings to life the meeting place between people and photography. In an era of the advent of smartphones and the diffusion of hundreds of thousands of photos a day, it was inevitable that concerns over the way in which we encounter photos and discern good images would arise. Moving beyond the exhibition space of uniformly hung frames, it’s only natural that the demands of the contemporary world would expand the definition of images to include music and other video media. Centered on the Seochon (“West Village”) area, the Seoul Lunar Photo Fest seeks to convey the beauty of these new channels of images through experimental, free-form displays. Diverse work will be explored through collaborative efforts by photographers, musicians, sound creators and other artists. In particular, a large-scale screen installed on the square in Deoksugung Palace will provide a new photographic experience underneath the moonlight of September nights.
서울루나포토 페스티벌은 사진과의 친근한 만남을 꿈꾸는 행사다. 스마트폰의 출현과 함께 하루에도 수십 억장의 사진이 생겨나고 전파되는 시대, 좋은 사진을 알아보는 안목 못지않게 그 사진과 마주하는 방법에 대한 고민 또한 깊어질 수밖에 없다. 액자가 가지런히 걸린 전시장을 벗어나 이제 사진이 좀 더 유연하게 대중을 만나고, 음악이나 다른 영상 매체와 교감의 폭을 넓히는 일은 자연스러운 동시대의 요구처럼 보이기도 한다. 서울루나포토는 서촌 중심의 문화 공간에서 펼쳐 내는 실험적이고 자유로운 전시와 함께 동영상 형식으로 또 다른 사진의 묘미를 전달하고자 한다. 이를 위해 사진가, 뮤지션, 사운드 디자이너, 비주얼 아티스트 등이 공동 작업을 통해 다양한 미디어를 선보인다. 특히 9월 달밤, 덕수궁 함녕전 마당에서 대형 스크린으로 만나는 포토필름은 사진 감상의 또 다른 즐거움을 선사할 것이다.
CONCEPT
Anchoring – Between Wander and Settlement
This year’s theme, ‘Anchoring’, attempts to question the idea of settlement in the digital age, as the subtitle ‘Between Wander and Anchoring’ implies. In a day and age where physical movement is facilitated through the Internet, to settle somewhere may not have the same meaning it used to have in the past.
Meanwhile, despite leaps in technology, there are still places where settlement is impossible due to conflicts and environmental damages. With this awareness, this year’s exhibit introduces works that portray the deconstruction of family, refugees in conflict areas, and changes in the lives of traditional nomads. Furthermore, it explores locality as a community where sentiments and preferences are exchanged.
The theme is also a metaphor for the exhibit’s own cruise and anchoring as it host its second event. This entails the question of how photography as a medium can communicate and anchor in the digital age. In this vein, there are also works that experiment beyond the boundaries of the photographic medium, such as the works by Lee Hai Min Sun and Sebastian Morales.
닻 내리다 – 유목과 정주 사이에서
올해의 주제 ‘닻 내리다’는 ‘유목과 정주 사이에서’라는 부제가 말하듯, 디지털 시대 정주에 대한 고민을 시도한다. 인터넷에 힘입어 정보와 물리적 이동이 한결 자유로워진 지금, 과연 어딘가에 정착한다는 것은 과거와 동일한 의미를 지닐 수 있을까라는 문제 의식을 담고 있다.
한편으로 엄청난 기술 발전의 시대임에도 분쟁과 환경 파괴로 인해 여전히 정주가 불가능한 삶이 지구촌 곳곳에서 펼쳐지기도 한다. 이런 현실 인식을 담아 행사는 가족의 해체, 분쟁 지구의 난민, 전통 유목민의 삶의 변화, 자신만의 둥지를 찾아나서는 방랑자 등 다양하고 색다른 작품들을 소개한다. 더 나아가서는 정서와 취향을 교감하는 공동체로서의 지역성을 탐색하고, 정주하는 사람들이 자연과 교감하는 방식에 관한 작업들도 함께 아우른다.
뿐만 아니라 이번 주제는 제2회를 맞이한 행사의 순항과 닻 내림을 은유하기도 한다. 여기에는 ‘사진’이라는 미디어가 과연 디지털 시대에 어떤 방식으로 소통하고 닻을 내릴 수 있을까라는 고민도 포함된다. 그 연장선에서 사진 매체의 밖을 넘나드는 이해민선과 세바스티앙 디아즈 모랄레스 등의 실험적인 작업도 함께 선보인다.
