About the project

City where had devolved the position of production to consumption and distribution is wandering. The brutality of city and the world ignore the ecology of life and occupy spaces and places though dividing map. However, city itself is consisted of numerous inerasable layers of discourses and is a living organism which of always changing at cross point between spaces. City is operated co-constructively by tense relations between social space and individual places.

Although the city as a consumption and distribution area in the industry society pushes artists to time and place of surplus, artists have been living their own ways in city. Through reorganizing relations between individual and overall, macroscopic and microscopic and excavating small and abstractive things and maximizing them, they emphasize that our dichotomous thinking about their own universality and try to show them through their works.

is the 1st project to examine the current state of horizontal and individual narratives within the powerful and vertical stream of the city, Seoul. We look forward to that new perspectives and interpretations about this exhibition will be created in a whole new context, Meymac in France.

Section A :Binary Oppositions between Creation and Extinction

This section is about the structural characteristic of contemporary city, so to speak, the external aspect of Seoul. Focusing on the spaces and the memories which has been erased quickly, homogenized structure and signs, materiality and excessive aspect of unlimited proliferation, this section shows epitome of a megalopolis, Seoul. With the works to express external appearance that has been transformed by modern history and social system, this section tries to induce us to recognize of structural collapse and material proliferation of city that being oblivious of.

Section B :History of magic in the modern city

This section examines intrinsic aspects that endlessly are associated with thoughts and behavior pattern of citizen through the modern history. Therefore, it includes any pathological symptom and trauma that Korean people consistently are having so far after the turbulent era of the colony experience, anticommunism and nationalism, and the issues such as gender, generation gap and personal identity that Seoul, a contemporary city has faced. And it also presents the works to show the city where future and past are coexisting with the notions of Eastern ideas and belief that embrace traditional culture, shamanism, legend and so on.

Section C: An Archipelago of Deconstruction and Reimagine

This section introduces the practices that actively reimagine the city based on activism. The works to reorganize Seoul through crossing subtle discords, intervals between standardized borders, reality and fiction and lightness and weight are included. In this section, provocative and witty methodologies which try to discover new futuristic values through actively deconstructing and transcending urban context and organizing alternative activism and art community.

기획 의도

생산의 자리를 소비와 유통에 내어준 도시는 유랑(流浪) 한다. 도시와 세계의 야만성은 도시적 삶의 생태계를 무시하고 지도를분할하며 장소와 공간을 점령 한다. 오래된 자본은 도시를 황폐화 시키고 도시의 외곽을 투기하다, 새로운 자본으로 도심에 돌아왔다.

그렇지만, 도시는 결코 쉽게 지울수없는 수많은 담론에 의해서구성되고, 수많은 장소와 공간의 교차점에서 역동적으로 변화하는 살아있는 유기체다. 도시는 닫혀서 정체된 곳이 아니라 사회적 공간과 개인적 장소들 사이의 긴장된 관계들로 구성되고 재구성 된다. 사회적 공간과 개별의 사적인 장소는 반대항이 아니라 상호구성적으로 작동한다.

산업사회의 도시속에서 생산자의, 소비와 유통의 도시는 여전히예술가(작가)들은 불필요한 잉여의 장소와 시간 속으로 몰아내지만, 작가들은 자신들의 방식으로 도시를 살아낸다. 이들은 개별과 전체, 미시와 거시를 관계적으로 재구성 한다. 생활사, 미시사, 지방사, 지역사, 개인사 같은 도시의 작고 추상적인 것들을 발굴하고 극대화시킨다. 이런 것들이 보편성을 가질 수 없다는 것은 분명히 잘못된 이분법적 사고라는 것을 이들은 작업으로역설한다.

은 주제와 하위키워드를 포함한 3개의 전시와 스크리닝 프로그램, 아카이브로 구성된다.

도시성, 특히 ‘서울’의 구조와 증식, 외형적 생성과 소멸에 관해 작업들을 먼저 다루고, 다음으로 도시민의 사유와 행동방식에 끊임 없이 관련하는 내재적 측면에 대해 이야기하는 작업들을 살펴본다. 그리고 나아가 능동적으로 도시를 재 구성하는 대안적 공동체와 행동으로 미래를 재 상상하는 작업들을 소개 한다.

Section A 생성과 소멸의 이항대립

현대도시의 구조적 특징들, 서울이라는 도시의 외형에 대한 이야기로 시작한다. 빠른 속도로 지워진 도시의 장소와 기억들, 도시의 균질화 된 구조와 기호들, 대량생산에 의한 물질성과 무한증식된 과잉적 측면을 통해 거대도시 서울의 전형들을 다루는 섹션이다. 역사, 개발, 사회적 시스템 등에 의해 변형된 근 현대 서울의 외피에 대한   살펴봄을 집약한 작품들을 소개하며, 이를 통해 우리가 미처 의식하지 못하는 도시의 구조적 몰락과 물질적 증식에 대한 본질적인 인식을 유도 하고자 한다

Section B 도시의 마술사

근 현대 역사 저변에서 도시민의 사유와 행동방식에 끊임 없이 관련하는 내재적 측면을 살펴본다. 식민체험, 반공주의, 민족국가주의 등 역사적 격동기 이후 한국인들이 지속적으로 겪고 있는 병리적 징후들과 트라우마, 그리고 현대 서울이 봉착한 젠더, 세대 간 갈등, 개인 정체성 등의 문제와 관련된 심리를 다룬다. 또한 여전히 유효한 원형의 세계들, 소위 전통문화, 샤머니즘과 전설, 신화 등 동양적 사유와 믿음의 모습을 통해 여전히 미래와 과거가 공존하는 도시를 보여주는 작업들을 제시 한다.

Section C 해체와 재상상의 군도지대 

능동적으로 도시를 재상상하는 행동주의적 실천들을 소개하는 섹션이다. 도시 속 기묘한 불협화음적 미학들, 규격화된 경계의 사이사이, 현실과 허구, 무거움과 가벼움을 넘나들며 서울을 재구성하는 작품을 소개한다. 도시의 수직 수평적 맥락을 능동적으로 해체하고 초월하는 대안적 행동주의와 예술공동체를 통해 도시의 새로운 미래적 가치를 모색하는 도발적이고도 발칙한 방법론들을 살펴본다.
