Wider Than The Sky. 하늘보다 넓게

We are constantly learning of new realities that are too complex to ever fully understand. Astronomers now believe, for example, that the visible universe contains an estimated 100 billion galaxies, and that each galaxy also consists of billions of stars emitting rays in myriad variations of colour. At the same time, extreme changes in the experience of space and time caused by globalized communication technologies are fundamentally destabilizing our traditional sense of self. In art, the Western concept of the sublime describes emotional responses to the experience of infinity, and was originally used in relation to the vast and limitless phenomena of nature that instill awe and wonder but can also provoke terror, thereby suggesting a darker side to the sublime experience. Today, rather than nature, it is often the incredible power of technology that supplies the raw material for a characteristically ‘contemporary sublime’. The exhibition’s title is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson, which evokes the limitlessness of the human mind. The full line reads: ‘The brain – is wider than the sky’. In their different ways, the artists in WIDER THAN THE SKY respond to our vertiginous reality. The works they present are mostly electronic – video and installation. Four of the artists live and work in Korea – Hellberg (Sweden), Klega (UK/Czech Republic), Morley (UK), Rafael (Belgium), and their works draw specifically upon their experiences of Korea. Walker & Walker and Grace Weir are from the Republic of Ireland, and this exhibition is a result for their visit to Korea in 2016.

이 전시의 제목은 인간 정신의 무한함을 표현하는 에밀리 디킨스의 시구 “뇌는 – 하늘보다 넓다“에서 가져왔다.
예술에 있어 숭고함에 대한 서구적 개념은 무한함의 경험에 대한 감정적 반응의 표현이다. 그것은 본래 자연의 광대하고 다함 없는 현상과 관련해서 쓰여졌다. 그 경험은 대개 경외심 그리고 놀라움을 담고 있지만, 공포심도 자아내기에, 이를 숭고 경험의 어두운 면이라고 부르기도 한다.

 오늘날엔 자연보다는 흔히 기술의 놀라운 힘이 전형적인 “현대적 숭고함”의 원 자료를 공급하곤 한다. 우리는 결코 완전히 이해하기에는 너무도 복잡한 새로운 실재들을 계속 배우고 있다.
예를 들어, 천문학자들은 눈으로 보이는 우주에는 10억의 은하계가 존재한다고 추정하고, 그 각각의 은하계 속에 또 10억의 별들이 여러 색깔의 광선을 분출하며 존재한다고 한다. 그와 동시에 세계화된 통신기술에 의해 만들어지는 시간과 공간의 경험 속의 급속도의 변화는 우리 자아의 의식을 근본적으로 불안정하게 만들고 있다.

<와이더 댄 더 스카이, 하늘보다 넓게>전에 참여한 작가들은 나름의 다양한 방식으로 이 아찔한 현실에 대해 반응하는 작업을 선보인다. 그들이 선보이는 작업 매체는 대체로 일렉트로닉, 비디오 그리고 설치작업이다. 참여작가 중 4명은 한국에서 살며 작업하고 있다.  헬버그(스웨덴), 켈가(영국/체코공화국), 몰리 (영국), 라페엘(벨지움)은 특히 한국에 살면서 겪은 경험을 담고 있다. 워커 앤 워커, 그리고 그레이스 외이어는 아일랜드 작가들로 2016년 한국을 방문했던 경험을 바탕으로 만든 작업을 선보인다.
